Past ISPN President (2016-2017) Dr. Edilma Yearwood led an expert team commissioned by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (ANCC) in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson to develop the Trailblazing Innovation Faculty Tool Kit. Intended as a teaching tool to inspire nurses to practice with moral courage and compassion, Edilma’s team discovered 17 themes central to nursing practice such as allyship, compassionate care, moral courage, trauma-informed care, and wellness. The themes are highlighted in the documentary 5B, which features first-person accounts from nurses, who without existing protocols, cared for patients during the AIDS epidemic forging a new, person-centered approach to patient care in Ward 5B at San Francisco General Hospital. The Zero Suicide Initiative is a program built on the belief that all suicides are preventable through proper care, patient safety, and system-wide efforts. With suicide as the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., psychiatric mental health nurses recognize that we must take effective action now to prevent suicide. This program has shown clear decreases in suicide rates through innovative care pathways to assess and diminish suicide risk for patients across care systems. ISPN and all nurses want to end this preventable loss of human life. Join us in support of H.R. 6273.

Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, the United States surgeon general, warned that youth in America are facing “devastating” mental health effects as a result of the challenges experienced by their generation, including the coronavirus pandemic. While the pandemic increased the prevalence of depression and anxiety, mental health issues of youth were already widespread. Rates of depression, emergency room visits, and suicide attempts are discussed among others issues in a 53-page report, Protecting Youth Mental Health, released Tuesday, 12/7/21.
AACN releases innovative teaching tool designed to inspire nurses to practice with moral courage and compassion. ISPN Members Cheryl Woods-Giscombe and Edilma Yearwood both were involved in the development of this tool kit. View the tool kit here.

The Biden Administration recently posted the Updating Payment Parameters rules, which reverses some of the Trump Administration's sabotage of the Affordable Care Act. The proposed rule extends the enrollment period for Marketplace coverage and expands the role of navigators to help consumers understand and use their coverage. The rule also restores guardrails for 1332 waivers. It is important to create a strong administrative record to support these changes. Please check out and feel free to share the comment portal and social media toolkit below. NHeLP will also have template comments available early next week.  This is a short deadline, with comments due July 28. Thank you for your help submitting comments and getting the word out. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jennifer Lav at [email protected]

In a new national study from UC San Diego Health, researchers found that nurses who lose a nursing position or leave the profession because of substance use, mental health issues or chronic pain are at an increased risk for death by suicide. Previously we identified that nurses in the United States have a higher rate of death by suicide than the general population. We now know the sad truth about the reasons for nurses’ increased risk of job-related issues prior to death by suicide. https://twitter.com/UCSDMedSchool/status/1381719004050378755

The International Society of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing holds a unique position. ISPN is focused on mental health nursing and a greater understanding of what that can mean not only from a U.S. but also from an International perspective. ISPN strives to raise awareness of the history and roles of mental health nurses around the world to better understand our part in partnership and leadership in promoting good mental health among diverse populations.
Many countries that have mental health nursing as a specialty, begin preparation for mental health nursing specialty practice at the undergraduate level with a focus on that chosen specialty as part of the foundational education.
Advanced Practice Nursing at the graduate level is an evolving role. As a result, the historical and philosophical underpinnings as well as the educational and professional perspectives/issues within these countries are uniquely different from those in the U.S.
The following publication provides insights into the history and current perspectives in mental health nursing in the United Kingdom. ISPN hopes that making this available to you will  provide you with an expanded cultural view and generates ideas about shaping the future of mental health care in a multicultural world of mental health nursing.

The ISPN Mentoring Initiative Navigator Program, or IMIN, is a capacity building project started in 2014 and sponsored by the ISPN Membership Committee. IMIN is designed to facilitate leadership succession planning by welcoming new members and first-time conference attendees. They are, in turn, connected with a seasoned ISPN member. The seasoned ISPN member who volunteers to mentor through participation in IMIN shares time with the new member that may include meeting for coffee, planning dinner, and  introducing the new member to the wider network of ISPN members. The mentor/mentee model can be implemented any way and for any length of time the dyad decides - some have the occasional check in by email while others offer structured telephone clinical supervision. IMIN is a voluntary program for all as well as a pathway to quickly connect new members with the larger organization.
Download complete information here.  Download the IMIN application here (PDF), also available in Word format.
