Snyder, PhD, RN, PMH-BC, CNE, RYT 200 received the 2023 Distinguished Achievement Award at the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation annual conference in Louisville, Kentucky. The Distinguished Achievement Award is given to individuals who have distinguished themselves through substantial contributions to (1) clinical, academic/research, and/or educational work in the dissociative and/or complex post traumatic stress disorder field or to (2) ISSTD’s mission and vision. Psychiatric Nurse Leader, Dr. Roberta Waite, has been recently appointed as Dean at the newly reconceptualized Georgetown University School of Nursing. The Zero Suicide Initiative is a program built on the belief that all suicides are preventable through proper care, patient safety, and system-wide efforts. With suicide as the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., psychiatric mental health nurses recognize that we must take effective action now to prevent suicide. This program has shown clear decreases in suicide rates through innovative care pathways to assess and diminish suicide risk for patients across care systems. ISPN and all nurses want to end this preventable loss of human life. Join us in support of H.R. 6273. Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, the United States surgeon general, warned that youth in America are facing “devastating” mental health effects as a result of the challenges experienced by their generation, including the coronavirus pandemic. While the pandemic increased the prevalence of depression and anxiety, mental health issues of youth were already widespread. Rates of depression, emergency room visits, and suicide attempts are discussed among others issues in a 53-page report, Protecting Youth Mental Health, released Tuesday, 12/7/21.

The Biden Administration recently posted the Updating Payment Parameters rules, which reverses some of the Trump Administration's sabotage of the Affordable Care Act. The proposed rule extends the enrollment period for Marketplace coverage and expands the role of navigators to help consumers understand and use their coverage. The rule also restores guardrails for 1332 waivers. It is important to create a strong administrative record to support these changes. The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 provides some temporary relief for individuals, families, and communities challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the time ahead will require extensive efforts to move the United States toward healing and justice. Our partners, The Global Alliance for Behavioral Health and Social Justice’s leadership and policy committee have developed a set of recommendations designed to address systemic injustices for the Biden=Harris Administration. In a new national study from UC San Diego Health, researchers found that nurses who lose a nursing position or leave the profession because of substance use, mental health issues or chronic pain are at an increased risk for death by suicide. Previously we identified that nurses in the United States have a higher rate of death by suicide than the general population. Scott Award, which recognizes a nurse who demonstrates the interdependent relationships among nursing education, practice, and research. This prestigious award from the American Nurses Association is given annually. Dr. Fitzpatrick is the Editor for Archives of Psychiatric Nursing, official journal of ISPN. July 23, 2018- Today, the Nursing Community Coalition (NCC) commends the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development Act of 2017 (H.R. 959). This action shows direct support for the fundamental connection between building the nursing workforce capacity and our nation’s health. The ISPN Mentoring Initiative Navigator Program, or IMIN, is a capacity building project started in 2014 and sponsored by the ISPN Membership Committee. IMIN is designed to facilitate leadership succession planning by welcoming new members and first-time conference attendees. They are, in turn, connected with a seasoned ISPN member. The seasoned ISPN member who volunteers to mentor through participation in IMIN shares time with the new member that may include meeting for coffee, planning dinner, and introducing the new member to the wider network of ISPN members. The mentor/mentee model can be implemented any way and for any length of time the dyad decides - some have the occasional check in by email while others offer structured telephone clinical supervision. IMIN is a voluntary program for all as well as a pathway to quickly connect new members with the larger organization. Dec 13, 2016, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) issued a final rule regarding Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) providing clinical care in the Veterans Health Administration. The rule grants three of the four APRN roles (nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, and clinical nurse specialists) the ability to practice to the full extent of their education and training, but does not include certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). The VA has provided an additional 30-day comment period on full practice authority for CRNAs.
